Komatsu reaches new heights with the new PC390HRD‐11 excavator

The new PC390HRD‐11 is the latest in Komatsu’s range of heavy duty demolition machines. It brings “best in class” working power to the 50 tonne machine sector, can be configured in six different working arrangements, can carry a 2.5 tonne demolition tool up to an impressive height of 26 metres, and can also work with a 4‐tonne demolition tool up to 15 metres.

The new PC390HRD‐11 excavator is a revolutionary and versatile Komatsu unit that removes the need for multiple machines in the demolition process. It was designed and developed, using customer feedback, by Komatsu UK (KUK), a plant located near Newcastle, in the North East of England. As Komatsu UK also manufactures the PC390HRD‐11 the whole machine works together as one complete system, ensuring smooth operation, precision, stability and operator comfort. In the development process, Komatsu recognised that demolition machines must be moved from site to site as easily as possible. A lot of effort went into the transport arrangements for PC390HRD‐11 and the machine was kept as compact and light as possible, without compromising durability.

The working range indication system on the PC390HRD‐11 is a new important and advanced feature: it allows the operator to use the machine to its maximum effect without compromising safety, even through a full 360o. It can also display the view from the optional arm end camera system. The standard undercarriage fitted to the new excavator is a mechanically variable style, with a much larger footprint than the outgoing PC350LC‐8 HRD. This gives the machine great stability.

The new hydraulic undercarriage option makes it exceptionally easy and quick to set up the machine on site and to reduce the transport width to less than 3m. In May 2017, clients from across Europe were welcomed at KUK to the PC390HRD‐11’s official launch and showcase. The new Komatsu excavator created further excitement across the construction industry when it scooped this year’s prestigious National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC) Award for innovation. It was also shortlisted for the innovation awards of the Syndicat National des Entreprises de Démolition (SNED) in France.

Stuart Blackham, Design Manager for demolition products at Komatsu UK, said: “All of the people who have worked on the project are delighted to have been recognised for their hard work. We are really pleased that a machine that was designed, developed and manufactured here at KUK has been received so well, and will be used across Europe.” He added: “There is a desire at Komatsu to continually drive forward improvements and innovation, no matter how well our machines already perform. This new high reach machine is an example of how customer feedback, combined with our own invention and innovation, can help create a game‐changing machine.”

The latest KOMTRAX telematics, and the Komatsu Care complimentary maintenance program, offer top fleet management and support, protect the machine against misuse and guarantee maximum efficiency and uptime.
